Milk intolerance can cause discomfort in the gastrointestinal tract. Respiratory diseases such as asthma, bronchitis and cough are often due to a milk allergy. Even skin symptoms such as itching and atopic dermatitis are due to intolerance to cow's milk. Milk intolerance also plays a role in mental symptoms of depression, anxiety, hyperactivity, and mood swings. The causes of milk intolerance
There are two causes that are significantly involved in milk intolerance. Cow's milk allergy is manifested by allergic reactions to different components of the white-whitening milk. Another intolerance is lactose intolerance. Most common is cow's milk allergy, which already develops in infants and toddlers, while schoolchildren and adults often suffer from lactose intolerance.
What causes a milk intolerance?
The cause of a milk intolerance lies in cow's milk protein. The immune system reacts to the milk protein and recognizes this as "foreign". Therefore, contact with milk protein leads to various allergic reactions. Although milk intolerance predominantly affects infants, this allergy can occur at any age. If a cow's milk-induced allergy is suspected, the family doctor should be consulted. The diagnosis is made through a detailed conversation, a blood test and a skin test. By keeping a food diary, the cause can be narrowed down. Changing your diet to a diet free of milk and dairy products will quickly eliminate unpleasant symptoms.
Which products can be used for milk intolerance?
Intolerance to milk may be due to an intolerance to certain protein constituents of the milk. Mostly, the body is allergic to casein or whey protein, in some cases even both. The symptoms are often very different and may be similar to the signs of lactose intolerance. However, not everyone who does not tolerate milk suffers from lactose intolerance. The incompatibility with casein, however, is widespread. Eighty percent of the total protein component of dairy products is casein.
In the case of casein intolerance, dairy products should be avoided. In these cases, even lactose-free products can trigger symptoms. The whey protein is preserved in cheese and cream cheese only in a minor proportion and is therefore tolerated by sensitive people. Since whey protein is cow's milk specific, dairy products of other animal milk species such as sheep's milk or goat's milk can be used for milk protein intolerance. Vegetable milk types such as oat, rice or coconut milk are also a healthy and tasty alternative. In the case of casein intolerance butter or cream is often very well tolerated.
